Binary numbers: counting with 0 and 1

A computer counts with only 0 and 1, like a lamp that is off or on. With enough of those bits you can write any number.

Lower secondary (grade 1)11 to 14 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a computing teacher.

Why

A computer does not have ten fingers. So how can it count to 255, or to a billion?

Inside a computer there are tiny switches. A switch has only two positions: current or no current, on or off. We write that as 1 and 0.

With one switch you can only count to 1. But with eight switches side by side you can already make 256 different numbers. You will see how in a moment.
