Bits and bytes: how big is a file?

Eight bits make a byte. Kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte and terabyte are each a thousand times more. That way you know what fits on a USB stick.

Lower secondary (grade 1)11 to 14 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a computing teacher.

Why

Your USB stick says 32 GB, your photo 4 MB, your film 2 GB. So how many photos fit on it, and is there still room for that film?

All those letters after the numbers tell you how big a file is. If you understand them, you can estimate what fits and how long a download takes.

It all starts with the bit: one 0 or one 1. A byte is a row of eight bits, enough for one letter.
