Networks and the internet

How the internet works

The internet is a worldwide net of computers. A message travels in small packets from router to router and is put back together at the end.

Lower secondary (grade 1)11 to 14 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a computing teacher.

Why

You send a photo to your aunt in Spain. She has it within a few seconds. How does that photo find its way?

There is no direct cable from your mobile phone to your aunt's. Your photo goes through your wifi, through cables under the street, through fibre optic cables under the ground and sometimes under the sea.

Along the way there are thousands of crossroads. At every crossroads there is a device that decides which way your photo has to go. How does it know?
