What happens when you open a website

Your browser asks, a server answers. In between, DNS looks up the address, and https makes sure nobody along the way can read along.

Lower secondary (grade 1)12 to 15 yearsDraft: Not yet checked by a computing teacher.

Why

You type an address and press Enter. A second later a whole page appears. What happened in that second?

Your computer asked a computer somewhere else for something, and that computer answered. That conversation follows fixed agreements.

If you know those steps, you also understand what the little padlock next to the address means, and what it does not mean.
